I am just getting into mountain biking and am looking to buy an bike that will not cost much and will last a couple of years. Then I might be able to move up to a nicer bike. I'll be going out only about once a week, on easy biking trails. Is there a good, inexpensive bike available from major retail stores? I looked around bike dealers' shops and everything is above my current price range. Any suggestions?

hello Lesa in Atlanta...consider getting a bike model from 2005 and or earlier with rim brakes as opposed to disk...i got a Kona Hahanna 2005 model for under 500.00...total I spent was 499.99 for some trail ridding and commuting to and from work etc....now this price might be a little high still for ya but anything lower will need to be obtained in your local want ads or ebay....to search a decent product just research the item being sold on the net and of-course make sure the size is right....if you buy from walmart or the like you will be very dis appointed....search out models like giant / specialized / scott / kona....

I had to mention I just bought an older, but still smooth running Hahanna for snow/winter rides before roads get faster in spring. I paid 60 dollars on Craig's list from someone across town. It felt heavy as I put it in the car, but the more I ride it the more I like it. even with paint chips and Acera shifters, it rides and looks like a little gem. Imagine a "keeper" for 60 bucks. PS, I'm 61 this year and still feel like a kid after a ride.
